US says to continue sanctions on companies building N Stream 2

WASHINGTON, Jun 21 (PRIME) -- Washington will continue sanctions on the companies  building Russia’s Nord Stream 2 natural gas pipeline, U.S. National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan told CNN news channel on June 20.

When asked why the U.S. suspended introduction of sanctions against the pipeline’s operator Nord Stream 2 AG, he said that the issue was whether Washington was ready to persecute its European partners, allies, and friends with sanctions. U.S. President Joe Biden said he was not ready to do that, but was ready to impose sanctions on the Russian companies that partake in the pipeline’s construction each 90 days, and that he would continue to do it, Sullivan said.

The Nord Stream-2 project envisages construction of two lines of a natural gas pipeline with an annual capacity of up to 55 billion cubic meters, running from the Russian shore to Germany under the Baltic Sea. Russian gas giant Gazprom builds the pipeline together with Germany’s Uniper and Wintershall Dea, Royal Dutch Shell, Austria’s OMV, and France’s Engie.
